History

Shoshone tribe Chief Pocatello granted the railroad right of way through the Fort Hall Indian Reservation, giving Pocatello its name and the next you thing you know, Pocatello is a small village. Although immigrants passed through Idaho by the thousands, it wasn’t until the discovery of gold in 1860 that settlers were attracted to the area. The gold rush brought with it all the accompanying merchants, bringing goods and services to the area. Pocatello Junction became an important transportation crossroad for the Union Pacific Railroad as it expanded its service. After the gold rush had played itself out, the settlers who had come for the gold left, but some stayed and turned toward agriculture. With the help of irrigation from the nearby Snake River, the area became a major supplier of grain, potatoes and other crops. By 1882, residential and commercial development had begun and on 1890, Idaho became the 43rd state. To learn more, visit: http://www.pocatello.us/main/history_pocatello.htm
